Germany is urging China to make significant concessions regarding tariffs on imported electric vehicles (EVs). The German government hopes that upcoming negotiations will prevent a trade conflict that Transport Minister Volker Wissing warned could have catastrophic consequences.
Seeking an Amicable Solution
Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s administration is advocating for an “amicable” resolution following the European Union’s threat to impose substantial anti-subsidy tariffs. These tariffs aim to protect European automakers from what is seen as unfair competition.
Germany’s Influence and Concerns
As the largest economy in Europe, Germany holds considerable influence, and its leading car manufacturers are strongly against the EU’s proposed tariffs. They fear that retaliatory measures from China could severely impact their operations in the crucial Chinese market.
A government spokesperson emphasized the need for significant movement from China, stating, “It would be very desirable to come to an amicable solution, but it is also clear that serious movement is needed on the Chinese side,” during a regular news conference.
Adherence to WTO Norms
Germany’s economy ministry also stressed the importance of finding a solution that aligns with World Trade Organization (WTO) norms. Economy Minister Robert Habeck is scheduled to visit China next week. Although he will not be directly involved in the tariff negotiations, his meetings with Chinese officials will focus on advocating for fairer trade conditions.
Avoiding a Trade War
Volker Wissing, Germany’s transport minister, reiterated the government’s position, stating, “Nobody wants a trade war with China.” The emphasis is on finding a diplomatic solution to avoid escalating tensions that could harm both economies.
